Home sauna session checklist (2026)
The cabin is furniture until the session has rails. This is a checklist for heat you already own or are about to own: shorter than the brochure, no alcohol, a way out, and a cool-down. It is not a prescription and it is not the Finnish cohort.

People get hurt in home saunas in boring ways: too long, too hot, a drink beforehand, a shared circuit, a child who followed an adult in. The useful checklist is short. The healthspan explainer is the other page — what the papers can and cannot say. This one is the door, the breaker, and the bottle of water.
Before you turn it on
- Name the circuit. A traditional heater is often 240V. An infrared cabin may be 120V/20A or similar. The choose a sauna page is the buying version of this step. Do not discover it on night one.
- Clear the floor path. You should be able to get out without climbing over a bench, a dog, or a latch you cannot work when you are lightheaded.
- Water on the bench, not a heroic goal. If you are thirsty, you are already late.
- No alcohol. This is the least controversial line in sauna writing and the one listings still joke about.
- Say who does not go in alone. Pregnancy, a cardiac history, blood-pressure problems, and feeling ill are clinician conversations, not a streak to protect.
During
- Start shorter and cooler than the ad. You can add minutes later. You cannot un-faint.
- Get out if you are dizzy, nauseated, or “pushing through” a headache. That is the session ending, not a mindset.
- Löyly, if the heater allows water, is a small amount on stones. A bucket is how people warp wood and shock themselves. Infrared cabins are usually not a stone ritual. Read the manual for the box you bought.
- Kids are not a cute extra lap. If they are in the house, the door rule should be boring and explicit.
After
- Sit, cool down, drink. Do not stand straight into a hot shower if you already feel floaty.
- Contrast with a plunge only if you already tolerate both and the floor can take the water. Contrast guide.
- Do not drive if you are woozy. Heat is a stressor. Treat it like one.
- Traditional versus infrared changes the air temperature, not this list. Hardware: traditional saunas and infrared cabins.
Once a week, when the room is cold
- Look at the heater, the cord, and the stones for cracks or debris.
- Confirm the door opens freely and the vent path is not blocked by towels or a storage bin.
- If the unit is on a GFCI, know where it is. A mystery trip is not a personality trait of the cabin.
- Blankets are a different object: zipper, towel, and a household outlet. Sauna blankets.
