Infrared vs traditional sauna at home (2026)
Traditional saunas heat the air hard. Infrared cabins heat you at lower air temps on a 120V circuit. The longevity-adjacent papers people quote are mostly Finnish traditional heat. That matters, and it does not automatically make IR a toy.

Shop the physics, then the literature, then the panel in your garage. Mixing those layers is how a $6,000 Equinox gets sold as a copy of a 90°C wood stove in Tampere.
| Home infrared cabin | Home traditional (wood or electric stove) | |
|---|---|---|
| Air temperature (typical) | Often ~110–165°F depending on brand claims | Often 160–200°F+ with rocks and löyly |
| Electrical (typical US home) | 120V/20–30A class for two-person IR | Often 240V and serious wattage, or a wood stove and a chimney |
| Install weight | Furniture plus a circuit | Building project (ventilation, ceiling height, moisture) |
| Literature people cite | Smaller, mixed, device-specific | Larger observational Finnish cohorts on frequent traditional sauna |
| Apartment reality | Sometimes | Rarely |
What the papers are actually about
Observational work on frequent Finnish sauna use (think several sessions a week, high heat) is the strongest popular-science story. It is still observational. It is not a randomized “buy this SKU, live longer” trial. Home IR is a different exposure: lower air temp, different heater mix, different humidity. Recoveracent will not map Laukkanen-style associations onto a D2C cabin. For the framing we will use, see why recovery gear matters for longevity.
When infrared is the right home buy
- You have a 120V/20A story and no chimney.
- You want a two-person box in a spare room.
- You will actually sit four times a week at a temperature you tolerate.
When traditional is the right home buy
- You want löyly, high air temp, and the cultural object.
- You can build or buy a barrel/outdoor traditional with the right clearances.
- You are not trying to sneak a stove into a condo.
